The Problem
Kyanja and surrounding areas were consistently recording poor results in English and literacy in the national examinations. This is mainly attributed to lack of access to books and other learning materials in the village schools.
Very few students can afford to buy textbooks for curricular reading and fewer can afford reading books to expand their vocabulary.
Our Strategy
This library is breathing hope and energy among the students of Kyanja community. The library is a free community resource to the public, serving children of all ages and adults. It offers free tutor sessions, reading books, reference materials and reading tablets.
CNFOUG volunteers register children from the local neighborhoods. Youth mentors read to younger children and while foster parents supervise and monitor children activities. children are welcome from. Children come from Dembe, Walufumbe, Komamboga, Kisaasi, Katumba, and Kulambiro.
Parents are encouraged to make their own travel arrangements to accompany the children home.
Program
During the school term, the library offers hot porridge to children from families in need before the start of the school day at 5:45 am to 6:15 am. Children may receive help with missed homework from 6:20 am to 7:00 am before they set off for the start of their school day.
The library also offers free group games, arts/crafts, music, dance, and drama.
During school breaks the library opens from 3:00pm until 6:00pm Monday to Friday. Children receive a healthy snack once they read for at least 30 minutes. There is no snack for children attending just for arts/craft, music, dance, and drama. This is done to encourage children to develop a reading culture
